7-050: Illuminator – Bar Chill

Bar Chill

Ian Oliver

Fromm says, “I believe I have met your father.  I remember him as a talented physician; used to speak very quietly and then suddenly speak loudly for no apparent reason.  Wore these heavy, dark-rimmed glasses that I suspect he didn’t really need.”

He appraises Oliver, “It was a long time ago but, yes, I think I can see a resemblance.

Richard Dicard

“What is your plan with Dicard?” Fromm asks.

So I decided, back when Oliver met the Commissar, that the Legion is huge; I haven’t quite sat down and done the math, but I think the Dominion has at least a million people under arms.

So, off the cuff I figured, what’s the likelihood that the Commissar knows Oliver’s mum?  It’s remotely possible, they’re both naval role officers that would be about the same age – I guess I’ll chuck some dice and if it comes up a critical he knows Marissa…and apparently Oliver is Mari Starr’s boy.’

Some time later, Oliver is chatting to a former Legion physician.  It’s natural to ask the sort of ‘might I know this person’ questions.  I have a precedent, they’re both from the same service branch and would both be officers, so I guess if it comes up critical they can have met…

Now, I hate too much coincidence in stories, it can break suspension of disbelief for me (like the protagonist just happening to fall into the one ice cave on the otherwise uninhabited planet that contains the one guy in the galaxy who can explain the plot…), but sometimes the dice want to tell a story…

“Sounds like him.” Oliver says with a nostalgic smile, probably looking down as he makes it.

“Tickle his ego and make him wonder why he’s taking orders rather than giving them was my initial plan. Do you have any ideas?”

Oliver might be the Kevin Bacon of Dominion with his 7 steps of separation.
