Gregar’s momentary burst of assertiveness seems to have subsided and he his happy to let Lia make the call.
Although it turns out that simply calling the shuttle is not that easy. The remote port at which Hio has landed is sufficiently primitive that there is no direct connection to the ship.
Lia calls the port, and a curt-sounding operator answers, “Grasslands Down, Operations,” followed by a promise of, “hang on, I’ll see if I can get someone.”
Lia then has a long wait – several Moments – listening to a silent line before a voice comes back on.
“Hio Watch Officer, yes?”
It is Ipan.
Lia responds in a smooth professional tone – she is uncertain whether the Hio has been compromised and is starting on a cautious footing.
“Hio, this is Lia. Please assure the Captain that the Spanial is secure and the Watch Officer is in attendance. The crew and passenger have been apprised with the minimal information on hand and would like an update on the present situation, please. Assistance is on offer if required…”
