The Snark is a streamlined design capable of atmospheric operations.  In routine space use it can be conceptualised as a narrow rounded tower with one flattened side.  In atmosphere the flattened side becomes the bottom of the vehicle. The ceilings and some floors have hand holds to facilitate access to the doors if needed while the ship is on its side under gravity.

There is some variation in size of the various decks, but in general the decks are a bit over 5m in diameter.

Standard numbering in the Dominion has Deck 1 at the Bow of the ship and the numbers increase moving Aft.

Access between decks on the Snark is via a central ladder well.  While the decks are fitted with dual grav plates for space operations, the ladder well remains in zero gravity.  The ladder well is 1m square and has a ladder on each of the port and starboard walls.  In the diagrams below the double headed arrow shows the directions the ladder well can be entered and exited.

Note that as the diagrams are looking aft/down from the front/top of the ship, the port side is on the right of the diagrams and starboard is on the left.

The Snark is designed to accommodate six people in routine operation, and so there are six acceleration chairs.  Acceleration chairs are designed to rotate with their workstations when the ship’s orientation changes.

Habitat Decks 1 – 6

Deck 1 – Control Deck

There are three acceleration chairs on this deck:

  • Pilot – Centre
  • Comm/Scan – Starboard
  • Observer/Auxiliary – Port

The ladder well ends here with some curved hand rails to assist entrance and exit.

Deck 2 – Medical and Office

Medical on Starboard and the Office on Port. Each has an acceleration chair. The medical bed is an acceleration cot and will change orientation in the same way as the acceleration chairs.

Deck 3 – Common Room and Galley

Common Room Starboard with a Couch, Dining/Meeting Table.

Galley to Port.

Deck 4 – Cabins and Washrooms

The ship’s two communal washrooms (dorsal) and two of the six cabins (ventral). The Pilot is usually assigned the Port cabin on this deck and the Comms/Sensor Operator the Starboard Cabin. Laundry facilities are under the sinks. The toilets fold into the walls, and do this automatically if the ship’s orientation changes sufficiently. In the cabins the beds fold into the walls for additional space, and a fold-down cover enables the bed to be used as a desk.

A folding chair is clipped to the wall.  Part of the open cabin space in the diagram is actually taken up with storage cupboards (near the foot of the bed).

Deck 5 – Cabins

The remaining cabins are on this deck. Assignments are usually:
  • Engineer – Port Ventral
  • Medic – Starboard Ventral
  • Owner’s Agent/Captain/Lead Mission Specialist – Port Dorsal
  • VIP/Passenger/Mission Specialist – Starboard Dorsal

Deck 6 – Cargo

Main airlock to Port Direct access cargo doors to Starboard. As the Snark is capable of belly and tail landings, winches are fitted to each door for raising and lowering cargo and crew in the tail-landing configuration.

Engineering Decks 7 – 10

The ladder well continues down 5m below Deck 6 before ending.  Dorsal and Ventral accesses open into a narrow cylindrical access space of Engineering.  Engineering has three grav-plated decks about 2.5m in diameter with alternating port and starboard access ladders along the walls.

In the centre of the bottom deck is the Engineer’s acceleration chair.

Deck 7 – Fusion Reactor 2

Deck 7 is so named through a slavish adherence to rules of nomenclature.  All the crew ever see of Deck 7 is a 3m run of Ladder Well with no exits.  In fact, Deck 7 is the home of one of the ship’s fusion reactors and the Ladder Well passing by is well shielded from it.

Deck 8 – Engineering 1

The top deck of Engineering gives access to some of the ship’s array of FTL drives and is used for parts storage.

Deck 9 – Engineering 2 (Workshop)

Engineering’s middle deck is used for parts storage and a small workshop.

More FTL-Engines surround this area.

Deck 10 – Engineering 3 (Engineer’s Station)

The Engineer’s workstation and acceleration chair is located on Deck 10.

An access hatch in the floor on the dorsal side provides access to a ladder well leading to the Hypermass Thrusters and Main Fusion reactor.

Decks 11+ – Drive Decks

The lower decks also contain a cramped airlock intended for use by the engineer for maintenance and repair EVA if needed.
