She doesn’t stop Oliver’s nerd rant.  She does, however, ask questions that prevent him from flying off too far into nerd territory where she can’t follow, getting him to simplify concepts.  She is also interested in his thoughts on practical applications, and if he’s willing she can turn the conversation to her own version of military-professional-nerd rant back to him.

He may feel – and rightly so – that his mother can be a bit of a workaholic, duty-bound, hard ass, but she doesn’t seem in any hurry to end the time with him.
