    There is a pause before Lia responds. She gives a short sigh.

    “It’s possible. He certainly made it sound like things at the estate were not related to our people being there but I find it hard to believe the lockdown just happened to coincide with their arrival. It’s also more than a little convenient that a simple backdoor enquiry was transferred to the head of the organization, wouldn’t you say?”

    Lia is composing a message to Lexi and her expert shadow (whose name I forget) as follows:

    Just dropping a line to let you know some of our little spanials are stuck in the grasslands. My enquiry is being handled by the person in charge but I suspect the negotiation is going to cost me more than I should pay. I expect I’ll see you on the coast!
