Because plastic is comparatively so much more expensive in the Dominion than it is in contemporary society it is a thing, as are rare woods.  However, precious metals and sparkly gems are always a thing because they look so good.

The rare woods tend to be associated with the traditional Zargonia darks, and the plastics currently with the bolder Octant 6 styles.  Though, both those and the more traditional jewellery are about design as much as medium.
