“It can be, I suppose.  

“Though I should not speak for all of us, some in the Vizierate maintain families.  Some maintain a kind of hedonistic lifestyle, that can be very social. 

“But I think they are in the minority, and most of us, certainly those of us with a senior or a full project portfolio seem to put the work first.

“However, it seems I am not someone who requires a lot of social interaction.  Most people seem to regard me as a sinister misanthrope.  Were it not for my embarrassingly large sway on local politics, I’m sure no-one would speak to me at all.”

He pauses, the twinkle in his eyes cold and in full force for a brief instant.

“It’s ironic having said that, that much of my working day is evaluating people.”

Having articulated that, he seems thoughtful, as if he’s analysing what he just said.

    She speaks softly, so as not to interrupt his thoughts unless he wants to listen.

    “Being a misanthrope can work to your advantage, I suspect. It can be easier to observe if you are not too close to people. But it’s rather isolating all the same.”
