He averts his eyes briefly from Lia’s, “she said I make her feel safe, and she said that I treat her well, but she’s never called me kind.”

    If Kort was looking he would see a complicated array of emotions wash across Lia’s face.

    When she speaks, her voice is soft.

    “Safety is important. I’m glad you can give that gift to someone.”
