F-050: Spanial (Hyperspace to Mundo Zargo), Control
Jennie spends the whole job running increasingly difficult scenarios for Lia and Oliver, from the basic undock at Zarg’s World and ending with maneuvering at Argyopoulos, one of the Dominion’s busiest ports, with station telemetry out of order and Legion ships conducting an exercise. Oliver is totally reliant on the ship’s own sensor array and peer-to-peer comms with other ships to guide Lia safely into port.
Oliver observes Lia, a aerospace shuttle pilot, handling Spanial effectively, something she would only have to do for real in an emergency.
Lia notes that Oliver’s comms protocols are spot on, whatever else he may be, he seems to be a skilled Comm/Scan operator.
Jennie praises them both for their performance at the end of the exercise.“Great work,” she says, shutting down the training sim, “really good. Lia, you have the Watch. I’ll leave you both to it.”
Jennie leaves Control, mood seemingly quite buoyant for someone who’s just spent a big chunk of their rec time working.
In game terms, Oliver has removed any familiarity penalty for working with the ship, and he can probably assume Jennie will give Karmen a positive report on events.
What now?
“Well, that went fairly well, don’t you think?”
“Really well. You certainly seem to know your way around. Ever worked on this kind of ship before?”
“Uh, no, I haven’t. Seems most systems are laid out much the same though.”
He looks to her. “How long have you been piloting?”
“Hmm, around 4 k-cy maybe? Flying was always something that attracted me. Not usually on a bucket this big though.”
She grins.
“What about you?”
“Oh, I’m rather new to space travel. This is the third vessel I’ve manned and the second crew I’ve attended.”
“First crew for me. Most of my flying has been in shuttles.”
“Ah. I wasn’t really a spacer until I got recruited onto Snark. Wasn’t even that long ago. What did you do before?”
She raises an eyebrow.
“We discussed this earlier. I smuggled. Snark was your ship?”
“Oh right. Yes.”
“Not mine, the Vizierate’s. I just worked there.”
“Ah I see. And before that?”
“I was engineering software and hardware for a private company.”
