Introduction
All Dominion Mers have an ID. The ID for humans starts with either an F, G, H or U*, based on the person’s Social Class.
F = Forerunner (sometimes called ‘Founder’)
G = Geneered
H = Hybrid
U = Unclassified
A = Felline
U is provided for where a person is ‘new’ to the gene pool, orphans etc. Genetic testing of an unknown can usually identify if the person is a ‘G’ but if they are not a G they are assigned a ‘U’.
All Felline IDs start with an A. Felline IDs are not further affected by the assignment rules below.
Assigning a Human Mer ID
The initial code letter assigned to a child depends on their parents’ and/or grandparents’ codes, as determined by the following six rules:
Rules
- Two parents of the same class have issue of that class;
- A Forerunner and a Geneered parent have Hybrid issue;
- An Unclassified parent and any other class have Hybrid issue;
- A Forerunner parent and a Hybrid parent have Forerunner issue if there are three Forerunners among the grandparents;
- A Hybrid parent and a Geneered parent have Geneered issue if there are two or more Geneered among the grandparents;
- Otherwise, a Hybrid parent and any other class have Hybrid issue.
These rules decompose to the following table:

The Rest of the Mer ID
The full Mer ID takes the form
<Gene code>-<Date of Birth>-<System code>-<City code>-<Birth registry code>-<serial>-<check code>
- Gene codes are as above – ‘A’
- Date of Birth is in Cycles, as per the Dominion Calendar (ie. omitting the dot) – ‘999999’
- System code is as per the list of main Dominion Systems – ‘AA’
- Region code is the three alphanumeric designator assigned to each sub-world Region (similar to airport codes today, but sometimes they contain numbers) – ‘XXX’
- Birth registry code is a two digit code assigned to a facility that can register a birth (for about half the Mers in the Dominion this is ’01’) – ’99’
- Serial is a three-digit number starting at 001 and incrementing with each birth registered at that facility on that date.
- The check code is an alpha character calculated based on the other code values
Example of a Geneered person born on GRRAS on the day Overlord Zarg took power:
G-193882-VL-GRR-01-001-N
GRRAS is a small facility and the main registration centre has registered the birth. This is the first baby registered on that date.
* Note that all references to character codes are anglicised versions of the Dominion’s phonetic script.
