A Jump 6 Map is an abstract representation of the distance from a star system of interest (the Origin System) to all other systems (Destination Systems) accessible by FTL drive from that system.

It is not intended to show direction, though systems are clustered by Octant, so approximate direction may be inferred.

A Jump 6 map is constructed according to the following rules:

  • The shape of a system’s symbol shows its designated Use Class (refer Figure 1)
  • The colour of a system’s symbol shows its Octant (refer Figure 2)
  • The Origin System is placed at the centre of the diagram
  • The Destination systems are arrayed radially around it
    • The degree of arc between destination systems is even (= 360° / Number of Destination Systems shown)
  • Systems appear in order of their Octant number, starting at the top of the diagram and proceeding clockwise
    • Zargonia is considered Octant 0 and so if it appears as a Destination System, is always shown at the top
    • Within Octants, systems are arranged in clockwise order of their distance from Zargonia, closest first
  • The radial distance between the Origin System and each Destination System is proportional to the actual distance between the systems
  • The Origin System and each respective Destination System are connected with a straight line representing the jump route
    • The line is drawn between the system centres, but not overlapping the symbol
  • The colour of the line shows the Jump Class (refer Figure 3)
  • The line is labelled with the distance in light years (or ‘lights’ as they are more commonly known)
  • Jump 6 Maps may be filtered based on Destination System criteria, for example, restricted systems are commonly excluded
    • If Jump Class is a filtering criterion, then the map is usually referred to as a ‘Jump <N> Map’ where N is the range of Jump Classes shown

Refer to Figure 4 for an example.

Figure 4 – Example Jump 6 Map

The Xaioyan system, filtered to exclude restricted systems is shown as an example.

Xaioyan was chosen as the system has routes to all Octants, with all Jump Classes and has Destination Systems with a variety of Use Classes.
