4-017: Aboard Snark 416 – Oliver’s Cabin

Oliver checks progress and discovers that the password cracking is going slower than he hoped in terms of tries per second.

While the nature of this sort of thing is such that the passcode might be unlocked in a moment from now, he calculates a 90% probability that it will be within 2 hectocycles.  It’s worth noting that brute-forcing isn’t usually a viable option for cracking passwords of this strength, but works in this case because he has the physical storage module and the computer and can match interactions between them to speed the process by orders of magnitude.

If he’s happy to wait he can let things run their course, or change his approach.

“This could be anywhere from a moment to three hectocycles, boss. Is that adequate or do you want this done faster?”
