F-463-Lia: Mundo Zargo Downport, Noms! Café
“There was a woman down the end of the dock, heard me swearing, told me not to worry; sometimes life brings you unexpected gifts.
“I wasn’t in a mood to hear it and acted like a grumpy idiot but she was patient said she’d give me a lift if I helped her load her own boat, her helper hadn’t shown up. Anyway, she had this small boat and so she and I carried boxes out of the back of an old van and loaded them into the floor of her boat.
“Not how I’d planned to spend the Cycle.
“Anyway, when we were done she picked up a container of fresh fish and some rods out of the van and she took me the long way round to the big island.
“So we went past the ferry I’d been going to catch and it was sitting out from dock, swarming with Legionnaires with a couple of military aerostats hovering over it. She just smiled at me and shrugged, then she pulled into a little pier at the end of an old warehouse. She said I could go if I needed to, but I decided to stay and help her unload, because…I don’t know. It seemed like a good idea. Stupid, I ruined an expensive top.
“Anyway, we’re almost done when a Legionnaire came up the pier, wanted to know what we’re doing. I held up one of the fish from the box, told him my friend had been teaching me how to fish. Legionnaire grunted and walked off.
“It seemed better than ‘I met this strange woman who wanted me to help her cart all these boxes to this warehouse during a Legion raid.’
“Anyway, she gave me a fifty for helping her and said if I was interested in more work to meet her back at the ferry dock nextCycle.
“I figure you can guess who she worked for.”
Lia blinks.
“You seem to have risen in the ranks since then.”
