A-216: Spanial, Mostly Lia’s Cabin/Lab
Lia Day 43

Kort responds, “some of the people I’ve met have taken civilian electrolasers and modified them so they have lethal capability, yes.”
Lia Day 44
What’s in the case?
Whatever that cell is powering, it’s quite cold. The Ingots
As a jeweller, Lia knows that the use of palladium as a material is uncommon but not unknown. For example, some white gold alloys are created using palladium. Functionally, it’s similar to platinum though rarer and thus more expensive. Some people say palladium is quite safe, others that it can be mildly toxic after extended exposure (eg wearing it every day for a kiloCycle). As a chemist she knows that palladium has an interesting quirk in that the metal has considerable capacity to absorb and diffuse hydrogen, making it useful for numerous technical applications. She can have a roll to see if she can think of any particular relevance it might have… any particular skill she’d like to use to do that? Chemistry seems obvious, but there may be other choices.Skyscape
How much effort does Lia estimate that the piece will require? Jewelry is one of those things that can take [15 minutes or 15 weeks/ a Task to a hectoCycle] and so the effort time is determined as much by the artist as the outcome.Zoner!
Also, Lia’s due for a Zoner! hit at the end of Lia Day 44.
Lia Day 45
Thingummy Hoop
The next work task on her list is the Thingummy Hoop.
…a flat metal hoop floating about the area that doesn’t seem to belong with the other equipment in here. It is perhaps 40cm in diameter, 5cm wide and a few mm thick with raised edges about 1cm high, there’s a torn fringe of transparent filmy substance (think heavy-duty glad wrap) coming out from the hoop’s rim on one side. The hoop also has a section that looks a bit like a belt buckle or a worm clamp that’s designed to allow it to slide over itself and change its diameter, only there’s no adjustment mechanism visible and Lia is unable to move it. She also notes a shallow ridge running around the side of the rim on the opposite side to the film. The metal is thin enough that it’s somewhat flexible, but it’s unclear exactly what it might be; probably some type of alloy.
On Lia’s previous examination of this item, she didn’t have much idea what it was.
It was recovered from the Cyprinidae’s Mess Area, along with the silvery mesh-scale and the busted and modified electrolaser rifle.
Any particular way she’d like to tackle it?
Lia frowns at the gun.
“Were there any other guns that we picked up with these kind of upgrades?”
Ok. “What kind of thing is extremely cold but requires a constant power source… Does that heat signature mean it’s running right now?”
12 vs 11 for Chemistry ☹️ She will look up Palladium and do some Research (sigh 14 vs 13 – clearly she is not meant to know about Palladium…)
Side note; remind me – in that information she knows about the Yarg, is hydrogen mentioned at all?
Since the skyscape is a personal project, she is simply playing until she is happy with the result. There is no specified time limit and she will work on it when inspiration hits. In terms of effort, the metal folding will be time consuming, since it’s more experimental and she is going off instinct to create the effect she can see in her mind’s eye. Once she has achieved what she wants with the metal, the rest should be fairly simple, if delicate.
Yay Zoner! How many doses does she have left?
Lia will consult with Gregar and Prrri on this one, to see if either recognise it as being mechanical in function.
