7-141: Illuminator

Next Cycle on 211.374, Oliver completes his work on Blob #24.  This appears to be an incomplete development project and is relatively recent, only about a kCy old.  It looks as if Argyle was trying to write a threat-assessment program.  It would take feeds from his security system, any news broadcasts he intercepted and other items he would input to determine a threat assessment level.  Based on the notes he has left inside some of the code and the raw feel of it, Argyle was struggling with this project.  There are many gaps in the version dates where he leaves it and comes back, altering things.  Huge slabs of code are commented out and some of the interface looks unfinished.

On 211.375, Erin drops by at the GC break and wants to know if Oliver would like to have lunch together.

That Bluevening, a couple of Vizants at a table near Oliver get into a heated, alcohol-fuelled discussion about languages and linguistic construction.  One insists that a study of unconscious assumptions hidden in language is a key to understanding important historical events, and the other counter-claims that language is too amenable to manipulation and artificial construction to be reliably used that way.  Their discussion gets very loud until a couple of Wardens come to their table and escort them away.

On 211.376, not long before Oliver’s usual bed-time, the Illuminator drops out of hyperspace into the Zargonia system, leaving Oliver feeling briefly queasy, as usual.

A short time later the ship’s information systems announce that ETA into dock is 211.379 at GR04.

Next Greenvening on 211.377, Nanny announces the pre-arrival meeting Dicard warned Oliver about will be on 211.378 at BR01.  Giving them all a sleep and the Illuminator will arrive in dock near the start of their usual work shift the Next Cycle (211.379).

 

At the end of Green shift that Cycle (211.377), Oliver completes work on IT Project # 26.

This file dates from about the same time as Argyle’s aborted project, above.

Argyle was apparently trying to get data off some form of unusual data storage device.  He appears to have spent quite some time experimenting with building an actual electronic interface to the device, then writing his own device drivers for it, then trying to make sense of the data he’s getting to see if he’s reading it correctly.  He finally seems satisfied with the end product, but the actual data he’s extracted isn’t saved anywhere.

On 211.378, Oliver will need to spend time summarising and preparing his report for the meeting on what he’s found so far.

At that time he has just started on IT Blob #27 and has read up to book #432.

Can I please have three rolls to see how his analysis to date and summarisation does?

Is there anything else Oliver would like to do during the time above, preparing for his meeting this Bluevening, or anything else?
