7-009: Illuminator – Oliver’s Office
If you review the summary of progress, here, there are twenty data blobs containing IT Projects remaining to be researched. He has decrypted those blobs, but needs to figure out what is in them. If you like he can spend time writing a program that might help with that, but it might take him longer than just doing the work using the meat computer in his head. Previous experience says it takes about two Jobs (20 Tasks) of effort to research an IT project blob, although some take longer.
There are fourteen blobs full of exercise books dating back over ten kCy (to 197.743). Some time about 204-205, Argyle started splitting his books into the three categories Oliver found them sorted into at the hunting lodge. His previous experience tells Oliver that it takes him about a Task to read and comprehend one exercise book (his Speed Reading and Eidetic Memory is a big help). Numbers of books in each blob vary between 30-100. Assuming Argyle’s labelling on his blobs is accurate, there are 1,692 books to be read. There are also various blobs containing other things that he may wish to research. The Illuminator is scheduled to leave dock in about 6 tasks and the meeting is in 18. He may wish to eat before then though, as that is is usual dinner time. fyi, Each shift has 32 Tasks, with 30 usually allocated for work. Oliver is in the current habit of sleeping during Red, Working during Green and…working on his private projects in Blue?I’ve been assuming he usually has dinner around the Blue Yellow Break and lunch at about Green Cyan. If you can tell me how he plans to tackle his tasks, plus how much effort he’s going to put into his glasses, that will account for the majority of his ship time on the journey ahead and I can work any encounters around that. This is an RPG Puzzle about resource allocation…
He’ll probably spend the appropriate 33% of his day working on his actual work, during Green shift if allowed. He’ll use his Blue time to establish his knowledge of the ship, maybe spend one job a Blue working on his glasses, two if there’s not much else to do. But he may spend an extra Blue Job doing his work.
And continue sleeping in red. If there’s demand for his shifts to be changed he’ll do so while keeping his percentages roughly the same. He’ll spend varying amounts learning about the ship, he wants to know what kind of people are working here, what kind of projects are being worked on and how important this ship is.
He’ll do most of this via any eavesdropping he can in the eating areas for starters.
Right now he’ll probably spend most of his time setting up his work space and creating a list, either physically or mentally of what he needs to do, at least come the next green. I assume he knows how to do that a lot better than I do. His plan will probably be to focus on finishing these books and get a computer to do the digital data blobs for him, which he can then decipher and read over when he’s able to.
He’ll make sure he’s on time to the meeting.
