“If she wants to buy what we got, fine, but I don’t want to carry anything but the most basic stuff off-world. It’s supposed to be bland cover for our run into Separatist space.”
There’s a pause, “so, something you and I need to get clear, just so there’s no misunderstanding. I’ll hold your spot on crew, if you want it, until you’re done, but I can’t pay you wages while you’re off ship.”
Lia looks stunned.
“Captain… Karmen, I would never expect you to do that. It never even occurred to me that you would consider paying me unless I’m actually working on Spanial. I will be back, so please hold my place on crew.”
There’s a small beat.
“I like it here. You’re good people and that’s not easy to find. I wouldn’t want to lose that.”
