I-157: Spanial, Common Room (Hyperspace to Captree)
Presently, Karmen mops the excess cake cream from her lips with a napkin and announces, “For sure, got some business to discuss, good news, another special pay.”
She surveys the table, noting her words have quickly brought people to silence.
She gestures to Oliver, “the bikeday boy here has helped us crack the various Money cards we’ve acquired over time, an’ it turns out that it’s a worthwhile haul.
“So, Oliver and I have agreed that he’ll take a share as a crew member rather than charging a fee for his services, and he’ll claim the Bringer Bonus.”
She surveys the room, “any objections to that?”
I’m going to assume Lia has no objection to that, if that’s OK; you are of course free to do so.
No-one else will speak up, but there are and have been some interested glances in Oliver’s direction.
Karmen continues, “Just a mo’. Kwint, top up drinks please.”
She disappears briefly to her cabin, returning with a bulky strongbox that she lugs out with some difficulty, dropping it on the table with a weighty thump. In the interim Kwint will refill people’s drinks as requested.
Karmen remains standing upon her return, better to access the box.
“So, I do have a bit of a problem. Our recent run of profit has run me out of unauthorised cards, so some of you have an unpaid balance owing until I can get to the Bank on Captree. Likewise, rounding balances are being paid in coin. Anyone has an issue, speak up or come see me after.”
She opens the box, perhaps assuming no-one will say anything.
“Let’s see, Gregar…”
On previous pays Karmen has distributed Money card boxes, but on this occasion her strongbox seems to hold several opaque bags with each person’s name scrawled on the outside with a marker. She hands Gregar the bag with his name on it and proceeds through the crew list.

Oliver’s Pay
In Oliver’s bag is an envelope, six unauthorised Money cards and a small stick of seven coins. Inside the envelope is a pay slip, which if reconciled by Oliver he will find accurately describes the contents.

The content of Lia’s bag is broadly similar to Oliver’s – an envelope, unauthorised Money cards, a stick of coins. Lia, however, has eight cards and a stick of coins that weighs almost half a kilogram. Inside the envelope is the usual pay slip.
