5-069: Legion Cast – Gymnasium

Metagaming

That is entirely fine.  I started out thinking “How would I replicate a real military fitness test using the GURPS rules.  So I got on to Google and did some research, then some more research on the results of the research, then I pulled out the GURPS rule book and checked out some of the rules down the back in the GM’s section.  Then I cranked up a spreadsheet and modelled how GURPS would handle a beep test.  Then I thought, fuck, that is a lot of dice rolls…

So… some abstraction seems to me to be a better way to handle this.  So I thought a few rolls to get a general idea of how Oliver went, ie whether anything goes particularly well or poorly, and two of each because physical fitness tests don’t vary much from the norm so it will need a pair of extreme rolls to not be typical of what one might expect from Oliver based on his stats.

Incidentally, my spreadsheet model suggests that GURPS’ running rules actually do a reasonable job of modelling running endurance for a beep test with results about what one would expect, but game-wise it’s basically just rolling HT checks until you run out of FP.

So, Oliver’s first 16 suggests that this may not be his best performance, but his 8 should allow him to recover gracefully.  The 11 is not great but not awful and the 12 is ok.

Felicity has him do push-ups, sit-ups, the Legion’s version of a beep test, and a pull-up on suspended rings.  Before each task he gets to watch an instructional video (in the later tasks, he may appreciate this as it gives him a chance to rest.)

Assuming Oliver attempts to do his best on these tests he will get a typical result for his stats.  If he’s not pushing himself he will do less well.

At the end of this he will be at 3 (of 11) Fatigue Points.  Or more if he’s not pushing.

If you like, he can expend Extra Effort to improve his score, but that will cost him extra fatigue.  If you’d like to take this option you can, just let me know how many extra you’d like to spend.  You can go up to -11FP, but every point you spend -0 actually costs a HP as well.  Oliver has a pretty good Will stat so he can probably push himself hard if you want him to.

How hard will he push, based on saving or spending FP as above?

  1. Oliver Starr says:

He’ll take it seriously like a test but not go overboard so we will take the 3 of 11.
