5-028: Vizierate Interview Room

She doesn’t understand the really technical stuff, but he has a sense she might be filing away what he said for later checking.  She patiently asks Oliver to explain the technical jargon as she sips her second cup of tea (Melody has been in and out again at her request.)

As he goes into more detail about his work with Argyle’s gear, she digs more, asking him to explain in more detail. She probes at length, but in the end she seems satisfied with his answers.

I don’t know how Oliver deals with stress, or how stressful he finds this sort of interaction, but by the end of what is a reasonably lengthy interview he has been thoroughly and clinically probed by the old lady sipping tea.  She hasn’t missed a trick or left a detail hanging and he hasn’t been able to get a good read on what she might be thinking about what he’s been saying.

She does answer his question though, “Argyle was a technical security specialist who worked for a time at The Black Palace.  Then he disappeared and turned up years later in the wilderness on Pristine, where he had been hiding out and occasionally selling his services to criminals.  That is how we found out about him, by the way, some of those shipping analyses you found on his computer turned up on a pirate ship captured by the Legion Navy and we traced them back to Pristine.  We know there is a particular set of documents relating to his work at The Black Palace, referred to simply as ‘The Argyle Notebook’ by his former colleagues, and we were hoping to purchase it from him and remove the security threat.  However, now we find out he has been working on some sort of deep network penetration project.”

She pauses, and takes a final sip of her tea, placing the cup to one side.

“I think the threat he poses may be quite substantial.”

Oliver would know that The Black Palace is the name of the Overlord’s headquarters, the central facility from which the Dominion is run.

Nanny looks at Oliver over her pince nez, “I suspect there may be a great deal more for you to do, young man.  It would be unconscionable for the Vizierate to permit such a security threat to roam about in the wild.”

She will pause a moment, giving Oliver a chance to speak if he wishes, otherwise she will continue on.

  1. Oliver Starr says:

I’ve rolled a Curiosity Roll and failed. I feel after hearing this information about Argyle he might be enticed by the things he could learn and perhaps even the challenge.

Oliver lived a life of high expectations both socially and academically, I feel he might be used to a great deal of stress. I like to think he’s quite cool-headed until he sees something shiny he likes or is injured.

He considers what she has said and takes a moment to think. “I highly doubt I got this notebook then. Just scrap notes at the best.”

“If I’m to be helping against this man who’s obviously well equipped, well informed and familiar with the way the Dominion runs things I might request having any information you might have on him so I can better understand his mannerisms, thinking process and what caliber of person I’m up against.”
